Winchester Pop Up Shop / Gallery

This week I have been helping out setting up a Pop up shop and Exhibition at the Brooks Centre in Winchester. The Exhibition space includes work by around 10 artists, including myself and Victoria (http://thepaperbandit.com), and the shop contains work from local designers, including ceramics, bags, lamps, screen prints and much more.

London Show

There is going to be two parts, one part selling prints and the other showing the best of this years degree show work from the whole BA Graphic Arts course. Constructed Environments

I've been inspired a lot recently by people photographing constructed environments so have been looking into constructed scenes like these found in the dioramas of natural history museums. I visited the London Natural History Museum and Bristol City museum to capture these images.

Some of the final shots from my model set for this project. I was trying to convey the atmosphere of this fictional american town, showing the gritty side of small town america. I was influenced by artists like Crewdson but my set and my budget were on a miniature scale.

I did think about using these black and white images instead of the colour ones but thought they perhaps lost some of the atmosphere. I like the nostalgic feel of these though.

Some experimental shots I did for my recent project, using models to create fictional landscapes. The scale is roughly 1/24th and the shots use a variety of materials, like flour here for snow.

Bought a new camera in Southampton today! Rather an impulsive purchase but it is a square format medium format which I have been wanting for ages so thought I would indulge my self. Hopefully whack a couple of films through it this week to test it so hopefully will get a few images uploaded soon :)

Just a taster of some of a new series of images I have been working on. I started it as part of the last project but am hopefully gonna keep going with it and build up a series to make into a small book. These pics dont really do the images justice so I'll try to take some photos of the final prints and upload them soon, these are just scans of some Lith prints I made. I also made these images into a zine which I sold a few copies of at the Brighton Zine fest today, but I sold all my copies so need to make some more before I can take some pics.

I've really enjoyed getting into some alternative processes with this project such as paper negs, fibre based printing, lith developer (though it is a bitch for reliability) and liquid emulsion. Long live darkroom :)

Amazing work by Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison. They use alternative darkroom processes and paint over their images to create these surreal scenes of "Everyman" in a desolate landscape. I definitely want to try and learn more about their techniques and think about pushing my own work in a more surreal direction.

Images from the "Thirty Six" project at Uni. The final piece for this project had to be a contact sheet of one black and white film. I wanted to create a sense of sequence through the images to make the contact sheet work and think it was quite successful. I was influenced by Duane Michals and the surreal style of that kind of 70s photography.

Less inspiring. We were warned that this exhibition might be a bit lacking and it certainly didn't inspire us. A mix of painting, video and photography but very limited and with very little cohesion or information. Included a couple of Cindy Sherman photographs which I had hoped might be interesting but they added very little.

"Pop Life" at the Tate Modern:

Tracy Emin

A colourful display of commercialism in art, based around Andy Warhole and others inspired by him. Not really my cup of tea but interesting to see works by Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons in the flesh and certainly a lot to write about for my museums and galleries essay.

Series for Portfolio Magazine

statement

This series of constructed realities is strongly influenced by surrealist ideas and aesthetic. The use of the egg forges links between the work and the work of artists such as Dali who used the egg as a recurring symbol of life and potential in his work. The egg is also a symbol of fragility. The work embraces the surrealist notion of playful exploration of ideas, and also the idea of a “juxtaposition of two realities”. The tension between these two realities is the key to the work. Building on Barthes’ notion that the “noeme” of the photograph is that it implies a moment now passed, “this-has-been”, this work creates a tension between two states, “this-has-been” and “this-will-be”. The images show a delicate balance, a relationship between two objects which is fragile and temporary and which will be inevitably disrupted. The viewer is encouraged to consider the moment after the photograph was taken, highlighting the photographs’ noeme, to capture the decisive moment and shift it, through implication, into the past. The use of thread and wire is intentionally loose and messy to highlight the temporary nature of these creations and the proximity of their destruction.

I've been sorting my collection of cameras and equipment to clean it all up and see what I have. My collection seems to be growing fast :)
